Why You Need a Coach

Maybe you are thinking of hiring a coach or mentor right now. Maybe you are unsure if you are ready. Maybe you wonder whether or not a coach really can help. If you feel stuck or have lost sight of your goals, the best thing you can do is find a coach who can help you figure things out.

How many successful people can you name that have never used a coach?

I asked the members of my fitness studio this question. We had a hard time coming up with an example. Most guesses were quickly proven false with a simple Google search. The name “Clubber Lang” was thrown out there. He is Sylvester Stallone’s opponent in Rocky III. But, he is, in fact, a fictional character and really doesn’t apply.

The truth is, every successful person in history has used a coach or mentor at some point in their career to take them to the next level. Pro athletes use strength and conditioning coaches as well as skills coaches to help them perfect their game and stay competitive. Some people use spiritual coaches to increase their connection to their environment or understanding of their greater purpose. Many of us use business mentors to help maximize opportunities and build our vision. In short, you hire a coach to improve.

A coach adds more time to your day and more value to your time. A coach can help you be more productive throughout the day and help you be more effective with your time. It’s important to focus on the unique things you do well (your gifts) to make your life and the lives of those around you better. A coach or mentor provides an impartial ear for your ideas. Most likely, if they are mentoring you, they have been there before and want you to learn from their mistakes and benefit from their successes. In life, we can choose to learn things the hard, often expensive and exhausting way through trial and error or we can learn from being taught.

I struggled in my business for several years before hiring a coach. I wish I had done it sooner. Since hiring a coach, I have doubled the membership at my fitness transformation studio. I am seeing my vision become a reality. I am helping more people. In my last fitness challenge, I helped 6 people lose over 20lbs and 15 people lose over 10lbs. I am making better use of my time each day and enjoying my days much more while experiencing a sense of accomplishment. This would not have been possible without my coaches, Cabel McElderry and Bedros Keuilian.

I have several coaches. I have my business coaches who help me get organized and develop a clear plan of action to move forward. I have fitness coaches who help me create effective and fun workouts for my members to see results and make healthy lifestyle changes. I have a Jiu Jitsu coach to learn to better defend myself and strengthen a martial art I’ve chosen to pursue. These coaches help me focus and find the best way for me to handle what is thrown my way while developing the best course of action for personal and professional success.

Maybe you are still unsure if you are ready. Let me say this: the worst thing you can do is nothing; doing nothing is worse than doing the wrong thing. If you decide to hire a coach and find out it’s not right for you, at least you learned something. Nothing is worse than the monotony of making the same mistakes or repeatedly choosing the same ineffective actions only to wake up one day and realize you have gone nowhere. You won’t get the time you wasted back.

Identify what is important to you; what you want to achieve. Hire a coach who will seek your success. You will not regret it.
